Your guides in Oaxaca

Benito Hernández and Suzanne Barbezat are happy to welcome you to Oaxaca.

Benito Hernández is a Zapotec from the Sierra Norte region of Oaxaca. He has lived most of his life in Oaxaca City. He holds a degree from the Universidad Autonoma Benito Juarez and has 12 years experience working as a guide. He is very knowledgeable about the history, culture and traditions of this land, and he loves sharing his cultural heritage with visitors from all over the world.

After completing a degree in Anthropology at McGill University in Montreal, Canada, Suzanne Barbezat traveled extensively. Having already been through most of the U.S. and Canada, as well as trips to Europe and China, she decided she should venture into Latin America. Her journey brought her through Oaxaca, which made a deep impression on her (not to mention a certain Oaxacan), she made it as far as Buenos Aires, Argentina, but Oaxaca had stolen her heart and she returned and made Oaxaca her home. She worked as a language teacher until she obtained her license to work as a federal guide, and she also runs About.com's Mexico for Visitors website.

Benito and Suzanne live in Oaxaca with their daughter, Jasmine and son, Jeronimo. You can see Jasmine's picture at the top of the page - the girl with the basket.

"Perhaps travel cannot prevent bigotry, but by demonstrating that all peoples cry, laugh, eat, worry, and die, it can introduce the idea that if we try and understand each other, we may even become friends."
